Ben & Jerry’s and Starbucks – Election Day Update

The voters are hungry for ice-cream! The line at Starbucks was not so long, but to be fair Starbucks was open all day and Ben and Jerry’s is running their promotion from 5pm-8pm.

Some news sites have pointed out that this voting incentive may violate federal voting laws, so the companies giving out the freebies need to give them out to everyone (not just voters).  Starbucks and Ben and Jerry’s seem to be giving their respective 12oz coffee and cone to whomever asks for it. No good deed…

What I haven’t seen is the law cited, so here you go:
18 USC 597 – Sec. 597. Expenditures to influence voting  reads:
Whoever makes or offers to make an expenditure to any person, either to vote or withhold his vote, or to vote for or against any candidate; and Whoever solicits, accepts, or receives any such expenditure in consideration of his vote or the withholding of his vote – Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both; and if the violation was willful, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.

Ben and Jerry’s – Free Election Day cone tomorrow!

November 3, 2008

Election day is tomorrow, polling times and places (for Vermonters) can be found here.

If you preform your civic duty, and don’t mind waiting in a second election day line you are entitled to a free Ben and Jerry’s cone (at participating scoop shops nationwide).

Just don’t take all of the C2B3 (Coffee Coffee BuzzBuzzBuzz). An apt election day flavor may be Stephen Colbert’s Americone Dream (which isn’t bad BTW).

Also there appears to be a free 12oz coffee at Starbucks for voters.

RJ’s (Reuben James) Wings

November 16, 2007

Chicken wings are one of those things that can be either amazing or awful, and not really too much in between. Chicken wings are one of the foods that need to be cooked correctly, sadly few restaurants do this.
Chicken wings must:
1) Have the chicken fat fully rendered
2) Be crispy.
While it is certainly is possible to over cook the chicken wings, resulting in dry meat, the vast majority of the time the wings are undercooked with plenty of gross slimy chicken fat on them.

Now that being said, RJs (Reuben James) in downtown Burlington Vermont, knows how to cook wings, and it just so happens that they have FREE hot wings Friday and Saturday evenings.

RJ’s Famous Free Hot Wings
So while the hot sauce may lack depth, they are generally well cooked, which is more important. Ironically, the hot wings tend to be best during the free nights, as the chefs tend to still cook the wings in large batches out of habit during the week.
