Boloco – Orginal Buffalo Chicken (wrap)

Boloco is a ‘mini-chain’ with its’ only BTV location on Church ST. Boloco is a portmanteau of Boston and local. Initially I thought it was some mash-up of loco (crazy in spanish) and burrito (small donkey).

Boloco has requisite outside seating for the summer.

Boloco’s default chicken is thigh meat AKA dark, which means there is more chicken flavor to the meat, similar to chicken wings. The buffalo wing theme is continued with celery, blue cheese dressing, and Frank’s Redhot sauce. The rice serves as a base to collect the sauces. I’ve taken to ordering this wrap with brown rice and whole wheat tortilla to health it up a half step. Only negatives to this wrap are the lack of local ingredients and slightly gummy average tortilla.

One of the things Boloco touts is their peel and eat model of foil wrapping, which is said to increase mobility. At least for the ‘original size’ I don’t foresee myself walking done the street eating this, as I won’t be encompassing the circumference of the wrap in a single bite.

Inexpensive at $6.94 with tax and they have a ‘sandwich club’ reward card if you plan to frequent the establishment.

Of note: they also have smoothies.

Sriracha + Bruegger’s bagel + Boo~Kies’s = Win

Dilemma:

  1. Bruegger’s Bagels – Doesn’t have “real” bacon or eggs.
  2. Boo~Kie’s – Doesn’t have bagels
  3. Sriracha Hot Sauce – Elevates sandwiches

The obvious solution is to combine a Bruegger’s bagel (wheat pictured) with an egg / bacon / cheese  from Boo~Kies (shown with optional hashbrown), with Sriracha (AKA Rooster) sauce.

This is a winning formula… all for around $3.50 (plus a bottle of Sriracha, $3.99 @ City Market).

Unfortunately this post is a little tardy, Boo~Kies’s cart appears to be done for the season, hit him up next spring.

Pho Dang – “Pho Ga” & “Egg Rolls”

I don’t really know anything about Vietnamese food, I imagine(d) it being some similar to Thai food, and heavy on fish sauce like Thai food. I also remember that Anthony Bourdain once ate porcupine in Vietnam. I was happy to have my preconceptions adjusted. I’ve passed by Pho Dang Vietnamese Cafe in Winooksi Vermont a few times, and for lunch on Friday I decided to see what this popular place was all about.

This small noodle cafe is the former site of Souza’s Burittos. Not knowing what to order, I ordered the “egg rolls” and the first “Pho” on the menu “Pho Ga”.

These egg rolls, appear to be more of a “spring roll”. I believe they are filled with seasoned ground pork (although not listed on the menu). The 4 rolls come garnished carrot juliennes and cilantro. The sauce is a yummy sweet, slightly spicy, tangy mix of flavors.

Pho Ga is the boiled chicken noodle dish. I was confused at first when I opened my take out bag to see a small tub of noodles (not pictured), a quart tub of broth, and a bag of sprouts, limes, hot sauce, and some mint? First I dumped the noodles into the broth, and the formerly packed noodles seemed to cook a little in the hot broth. After being consumed with the delicious broth, and fun of eating noodles with chopsticks, I remembered the bag of accompaniments and to take a picture (above).  I tossed in some sprouts into the soup, and a couple of the mint leaves, and swirled in a little of the hot sauce. The soup then takes on a new character, I made a discovery: Pho is fun to eat!

I discovered that dipping the chicken into the hot sauce once it’s out of the broth is the way to go. I will be back to get a little more acquainted with Vietnamese food, and get my noodle slurp on.

The Pho was under $7 and the Egg Rolls were $3.50 (both came to under $10 with tax).

Wings Over Burlington, “Red Alert & Teriyaki wings”

Wings Over Burlington, is the newest franchisee in the Wings Over chain. They are located in the “Blue Mall” across from the University Mall in Burlington Vermont. I’ve been keeping my eyes open to find a chicken wing joint that would replace the quality once found at the now defunct Bandit’s Wings.

The interior is very clean featuring diamond-plate on the walls, silver metal chairs, silver metal tables, (as well as high-def TVs). It’s like a sports bar feel with no booze, and less kitsch (sublte airplane interior). What is a little kitschy is the airplane themed menu. I ordered the “puddle jumper” which is 10 wings.

As seen in the picture, cool metal table, all-important paper towel roll, side of celery, and interestingly there is an option to order two flavors at once (5 each). The red alert sauce is good, medium spicy, tastes like standard Frank’s Red Hot with more of a tomato sauce base. The teriyaki sauce was little bland, but this may be in part due to eating the “red alert” hot wings first. The wings were a little crispy, but failed the #1 rule of wings… chicken fat must be fully rendered. So despite the favorable hot sauce, I didn’t care for these wings. It’s disappointing that a wing “specialist” would under-cook their wings, my office-mate confirmed his wings were cooked even less than mine (no crispness).

This may be opening week jitters, so I may give them a second chance in the future. The “puddle jumper” 10 wings, was ~$7.50 with tax.
