Mexicali – “Chile Relleno”

February 22, 2008

Mexicali is a Tex-Mex restaurant in Williston Vermont, on the back side of Best Buy.  Mexicali has great margaritas and an awesome salsa bar:

I was introduced to Chile Relleno at Penny Cluse Cafe, I’m using their version as a reference of what I like. I like the presentation of this plate, but taste-wise I think their could be some tweaks. First what is Chile Relleno?

Chile Relleno consists of pan or deep deep fried pablano peppers, which are quite mild and have a nice flavor. Typically the peppers are stuffed with at least cheese, and finally covered with some sort of sauce / salsa.

In Mexicali’s version, they stuff their pablanos with chicken and cheese. I love the fact that they went for something beyond cheese for the stuffing, however they used chicken cubed chicken breast. Chicken breast is healthy, but the texture and flavor is wrong for this dish. Shredded seasoned chicken would have been a much better choice. Additionally the sauce was a little bland (a suprise considering the yummy salsa bar options). Finally I didn’t like the eggy-breading, it concealed the sublte pablano flavor. The side of beans were good, but the cornbread missed, too sweet and moist.

At $11, I would order something other than the Chile Relleno at Mexicali.

Penny Cluse Cafe -“Sleepy Nate’s Biscuits, Fruit Cup, and Beef Quesadilla Special”

February 5, 2008

This Sunday I went back to one of my favorite spots Penny Cluse. One of the institutions at Penny Cluse is Sleepy Nate’s Biscuits:

The biscuits were perfect this time, slightly crunchy but not over cooked. The gravy is an herb gravy with green onions, very light and tasty, good hangover remedy. Sleepy Nate’s are fun to share, but get the “two biscuit” option as everyone seems to like this dish.

Have I reviewed this before? Yes, I’m reviewing the fruit cup again because the fruit changes (the blood orange was awesome), and I’m reiterating the point that you should get it when you go.

Penny Cluse knows Tex-Mex, and the special quesadilla is evidence of this:

Two layers of tangy beef, cheese, and fresh jalapenos on crispy fresh flour tortillas make this a winner. I had fun dunking my quesadilla into the nicely seasoned beans, but there is also a side of salsa ranchero (not pictured) that is included. In addition to beans, in the center of the plate is a yummy edible cabbage, cilantro salad / garnish.

The small fruit cup was $2.75, Sleepy Nate’s $3, and I believe the special quesadilla was $7.50, all before tax.
